Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of lumbar spine

Abstract
Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the spine (OPLL) is a newly recognized entity. Although compression of the spinal cord by an ossified posterior longitudinal ligament was reported by Keys as early as 1838 in the Guy Hospital Report and similar papers have appeared in the literature concerning spinal column pathology, OPLL was not recognized as a definite clinical entity until recent years.
In Japan in 1960 Tsukimoto14) was the first to describe this pathologic condition with autopsy findings. It was estimated statistically that there were about reported 4000 patients with OPLL in Japan15).
In the past 10 years there were three reports of this condition in Korea ,1,2,3) and also in, other countries including United States and Europe4) there were several reports. Among the reported cases, OPLL were most frequently developed in the cervical spine, and OPLL of the thoracolumbar region were very rarely reported,15,16).
The authors report a case of OPLL of lumbar spine of 19 year-old young man and the result of the surgical treatment (decompression laminectomy plus posterior excision of the ossified mass) with the review of the literature.
